Highlands and Tea Country

Day 01

Upon arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport, you will be transferred to a nearby hotel. Remainder of the day at leisure.
Morning, leave for Kandy stopping en-route at the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. With around 80 elephants of all ages, it provides visitors a unique opportunity to see the pachyderms at close quarters.

The highlight is to watch the herd travel down to the river for their daily bath where you can observe the mischievous antics of the calves and the adults blissfully immersing themselves in the cooling waters.

Upon arrival in Kandy, check-in at your hotel. Remainder of the day at leisure. Spend 02 nights in Kandy.
Morning, visit the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, which has over 4,000 different species of plants and is regarded among the finest in Asia.

Afterwards, you have the option of visiting a Gem shop and museum in Kandy, where visitors can see the precious stones and there are exhibits providing additional information on gem mining.

In the late afternoon, go on a guided tour of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The sacred tooth relic of the Buddha was smuggled in to Sri Lanka from India by a princess in the 4th century AD and was initially kept in Anuradhapura and then moved across the country over time before being housed in Kandy. This sacred temple attracts thousands of white-clad pilgrims on a daily basis bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani for their offerings which are known as pujas.

Afterwards, attend a cultural dance show, which provides an insight into the array of dances and playing of drums linked to Sri Lanka’s ancient traditions with the participants dressed in their decorative costumes.

Overnight in Kandy.
This morning, travel by train on an observation deck carriage to Ella enjoying a scenic rail journey with panoramic views of the highlands as you pass through numerous tea fields, patches of cloud forests and waterfalls. One of the highlights of the journey is traveling on the 9 arches bridge, which is a beautiful example of English engineering and design and built entirely out of solid rocks, bricks and cement without the use of steel.

Upon arrival in Ella Railway Station, travel by road to your hotel in Haputale. Boasting some of the most stunning views of the country, located on the southern edge of the hill country, Haputale is a town clinging on the long narrow mountain ridge which falls off on both sides. This produces some amazing vistas which can be viewed in its full glory at sunrise and sunset.

Spend 03 nights in Haputale
After an early breakfast, travel to the Lipton’s Seat viewpoint. This place gets this name after the famous tea planter Sir Thomas Lipton who was said to have used this spot to observe the surrounding region of his tea plantations. On a clear day the view will be breath taking and the best time to visit is early morning as the mist starts rolling in. This place gives a stunning view of areas such as the Handapanagala lake, Chandrika tank, Udawalawe Reservoir and the Wedi Hiti Mountains, as well as the Hambantota Harbour on the southern coast.

Afterwards, go on a guided tour of a tea factory and estate. The factory displays machinery and equipment used in the times of the colonial period, and demonstrates the process of manufacture. The tour ends with a refreshing cup of this great brew.

In the afternoon, visit the Adisham Bungalow, which is monastery of the Sylvestro Benedictine monks. This large stone building was initially built by Sir Thomas Lester Villiers in 1931 who was a tea planter and later sold in 1961 to the Benedictine monks. The building has a unique old world charm which is brought out by the antique furniture and architecture. Time permitting, you can also visit the nearby St. Andrew’s Church which was built in 1875 and is known for its architectural splendor
Make an early morning start with a packed breakfast to Horton Plains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and take a guided walk along the nature trails to a viewpoint known as World’s End with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. On the walk back you can stop over to see the impressive Baker’s Falls in full flow. Sambar, Sri Lanka’s largest species of deer are encountered regularly in the plains close to the entrance.

Afterwards, return to your hotel in Haputale and spend the remainder of the afternoon at leisure.
Morning, leave for Tangalla in the south-coast enjoying a scenic drive as you descend from the hill country towards the palm-fringed coast. Famed for its picturesque golden sandy beaches, palm trees and rocky coves, Tangalle is a popular destination for beach goers.

Suggested excursions from Tangalle include:

Turtle watching in Rekawa: Rekawa beach south of Tangalle is an important nesting site for sea turtles; turtle watching excursions are conducted after dark by volunteers from the Turtle Conservation Project where up to five species of marine turtles have been recorded. The Green Turtle and Olive Ridley are the most encountered species.

Mulkirigala Rock Temple:

Going back to the 2nd century AD, Mulgirigala is a monastic site where the temples are carved out of a huge rock outcrop. From the summit, which is 200 metres above sea level, there are panoramic views of the surrounding jungles and countryside. The interior of the cave temples with reclining Buddhas and murals are akin to Dambulla.

Guided safari to Uda Walawe National Park:

Uda Walawe is a stronghold of the Asian Elephant and one of the best places to see them in the wild year-round. You can get good views of the small herds of females and their young grazing on the tall grasses or immersing themselves in the water while the lone bulls are often found within close vicinity of the herds. Grey Langur, Toque Macaque, Jackal, Mugger Crocodile and Spotted Deer are the other larger animals seen occasionally.

Overnight in Tangalle.
After breakfast, leave for Colombo.

The capital city and commercial hub of Sri Lanka, Colombo is gradually transforming into a busy metropolis. Located on the west coast of the island with a population in the city numbered at around 800,000 it is by far the biggest city in the country. Lined with an intriguing mix of classical 18th and 19th century buildings and architecture from the Colonial period, the city has undergone several restoration and renovation projects in these “heritage” structures which have been converted to trendy shopping complexes, arcades and restaurants. Time permitting you would like to go on a guided city tour of Colombo. The Galle Face Green, Gangaraamaya Temple complex and Beira Lake, Independence Square, Town Hall, the markets of Pettah and the heritage buildings in Fort are some of the capital’s main attractions.

In case of any currency fluctuations or amendments in local Government taxes, or any fuel hike, we reserve the right to adjust the tour price accordingly. The due increase or decrease will be communicated accordingly.

Approximate drive times given in the itinerary are direct drive times and do not take into account any traffic situations, road repairs or stops along the way which might increase the time it takes to arrive at the destination.
Upon receipt of Tour Confirmation Voucher, an advance of 25% of the total invoice value if the arrival date is more than 45 days. If the arrival date is less than 45 days, then 100% of the total invoice value is to be paid.

Balance 75% of the invoice value to be paid, at least 45 days prior to the arrival date.

Payments are required within seven days, except where circumstances dictate that we request otherwise.

Suppliers may demand stricter payment terms on some bookings. These occasions will always be advised to you before booking and stated on your Travel Voucher. Individual cancellation terms will always be stated.

Our prices include all applicable taxes.*Frequent fluctuations in the Sri Lankan government tax policy mean that applicable taxes can change suddenly without prior notice.

A bank surcharge of 3% is applicable for payments made by credit cards.

Customers must pay all bank charges when making payments via bank transfers. Failure to do so will invalidate your booking and will bring further change to cover bank charges.

There will be no additional postage fees, booking fees or other hidden charges. Exchange rates are based on live on-day rates at time of booking and are not subject to change.
We are committed to high levels of professionalism to protect your booking. But we reserve the right to cancel your booking in any incidence of Force Majeure. In this event we will return all recoverable costs and, wherever possible, offer an alternative booking of comparable type and quality for your consideration. We cannot be held liable for any incidental expenses that you may incur during arrangements for a booking that is subsequently cancelled by us.

Force Majeure:
We cannot accept responsibility for Force Majeure – defined in these booking conditions as any specific event which we, as the supplier of the services, could not reasonably have foreseen, influenced or avoided. These include war, or threat of war, riots, civil strife, terrorism, contamination, extreme or unusual weather conditions, volcanic eruptions, industrial disputes, changes to sports itineraries, natural and nuclear disasters, fire, flight cancellations or rescheduling by airlines or any similar event beyond our control.
In event of cancellation, in whole or part, we voluntarily return all recoverable costs, above and beyond the limits laid down in our Booking Conditions.

In the case of cancelled tailor-made itineraries, we reserve the right to levy additional admin costs of up to 8 per cent of total booking cost when calculating recoverable costs.

No refunds are normally provided for early checkouts or no-shows.

Any individual wishing to cancel a booking must immediately notify the Classic Destinations representative by email. The cancellation is timed from 09:00hrs on the next working day to enable us to contact Suppliers. In the event of a group cancellation, we will hold each individual equally liable for cancellation costs.
