Winter Luxury Tour - Elegant Serendipity

Day 01

Today after you checkout, you will head back to the airport (4 hrs drive), where you will bid farewell and take the flight back home.
After checkout, you will journey towards Galle , in the Southern Coast of the island, which is a 3 hour drive from Kotugoda. You will take a scenic drive, where you will enjoy views of golden beaches and blue ocean lined with coconut palms.

En-route stop over at a turtle hatchery in Kosgoda. The Green Turtle, Leatherback Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Olive Ridley and the Loggerhead Turtle are among five of the world’s seven species of sea turtles that nest on the beaches of Sri Lanka. Kosgoda remains one of the main nesting sites for these marine turtles on the west coast and the hatcheries collect the most recently laid eggs and re-bury them in protected areas to protect them against poachers. Once the eggs hatch, the baby turtles are kept for a day or two in a tank prior to being released back into the ocean.

Thereafter visit a Mask Museum in Ambalangoda. Ambalangoda is famous for the production of traditional Sri Lankan masks which are hand-carved and handpainted, which are worn by performers in southern forms of dance such as Kolam (masked dance-drama), Kandyan and Sabaragamu dances. The Ariyapala & Sons Mask Museum displays a wide collection of masks used in low country dances, where one can also see how they are being made in the workshop adjoining the museum.

Upon reaching Galle, check into the iconic Amangalla Hotel which is located in-side the famous Dutch Build Fort. Spend the remainder of the evening at leisure.
After breakfast, head towards the Koggala Airfield 30 min drive away.

From here you will hop on an airplane to embark on a memorable ride over the oceans off the South Coast of SriLanka to view the world’s largest animal, the magnificent Blue Whale. These leviathans are resident throughout the year in Sri Lanka, and can grow to an astounding 80-90 feet in length. The best way to witness them is from the air, where one gets a bird’s eye view perspective seldom witnessed by others. By air one can view the full size and scale of these giants.

Return back to land, and head towards the Galle Fort, where your guide will take you on a tour among the ancient cobbled streets and ramparts of this old colonial fort now restored.

The once sleepy Galle Fort is now a vibrant and bustling area with a distinctively Mediterranean feel to it with excellent examples of colonial architecture and well preserved fortifications. Explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site by taking a leisurely stroll along the Ramparts with its panoramic views. You can explore its narrow streets and laneways bustling with jewellery shops, numerous cafes, restaurants and luxurious villas. The Main Gate built by the British in the 19th century and the old gate which is inscribed with the Dutch East India Company’s coat of arms, the18th century built Clock Tower, Meeran Jumma Mosque and the nearby Lighthouse, the Anglican All Saints Church and the Dutch-reformed Church are some of the key sites that you will visit.
Once you checkout, you will journey towards Yala, which is deeper into the South, (3 hrs drive) You will check into the luxurious Chena Huts, where you will enjoy lunch, Late afternoon, hop on a safari jeep and go on your first guided game drive in the famous Yala National Park. The Yala National Park is the country’s premier destination for wildlife viewing. Yala’s star attraction is undoubtedly the Leopard and Yala Block I is believed to have the highest concentration of these big cats in the world. Leopards however are elusive by nature and we recommend a minimum of three to four game drives to have the best opportunities for good encounters. It is also one of the few places in the country where the endangered shaggy coated Sloth Bear can be seen. Asian Elephants are also encountered; lone bull elephants, a few iconic tuskers and small herds of females and calves maybe seen. Jackal, Sambar, Spotted Deer Buffalo, Wildboar and the Grey Langur are among the other larger mammals that may be seen. Overnight stay in Yala
Spend the early morning and afternoon game drives in Yala National Park.
After an early checkout, you will head up towards Haputale. (3.5-4 hrs drive) En-route you will be stopping over at Buduruwagala to witness some unique rock carvings. Located in the outskirts of Wellawaya in the south of the island, lies Buduruwagala, a stunning archaeological site comprising of seven large precisely cut rock sculptures which are believed to date back to the 10th century AD and are thought to have belonged to the Mahayana school of Buddhism. The largest is a statue of the Buddha which is 16 metres in height and is flanked on either side by a group of three figurines. En-route you will also pass the scenic mountainsides of Ella. Ella is a scenic mountain retreat visited predominantly by younger travellers who are keen to explore the outdoors. Ella town has a number of attractive guest houses and a number of restaurants and cafes. There are some interesting hiking trails, waterfalls and scenic viewpoints around the Ella area including the Ravana Ella Falls and the iconic Nine Arches bridge. Upon reaching Haputale, you will check into your abode for the next two nights, the historic Thotalagala Estate. Spend the remainder of the day at leisure, savouring the stunning views and salubrious climes of this region.
Today you will spend the day at leisure. During the afternoon you will go on a guided tour and tea experience organized by the estate. You will visit the iconic Dambatenne Tea Factory, and guided by the local expert on the art of the tea making process. Thereafter enjoy high tea at the estate of the famous tea pioneer Sir Thomas Lipton.
Once you checkout from this magical place, you will head towards the town of Kandy (3 hrs drive). Known as the “Cultural Capital” of Sri Lanka and a UNESCO world heritage site, Kandy was established in the years 135AD by King Wickramabahu and was named Senkadagalapura at the time. In 1592 Kandy became the official Capital of the last Sinhalese Kingdom as the coastal areas were conquered by the Portuguese invaders. The hill capital remained a stronghold despite constant invasions by the Portuguese and the Dutch during the 16th, 17th and 18th century and also by the British (most notably in 1803) which were repelled thanks to the hilly landscapes, and guerilla tactics of the Sinhalese forces. The last ruling dynasty of Kandy was the ‘Nayaks’ of Kandy while the Kingdom preserved its independence until it finally fell to the British in 1815, mainly due to the lack of support of the noble families. The British deposed the last king, Sri Wikrama Rajasingha, and all claimants to the throne, thus ending the last traditional monarchy of Sri Lanka. Here you will visit the famous Sacred Temple of the Tooth, This sacred temple was built in the 16th century AD and is located adjacent to the Royal Palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy and overlooks the expanses of the Kandy lake. Referred locally as the Sri Dalada Maligawa, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the most revered site in the country. This temple complex houses the sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha, and with strong political sway to who holds possession of the tooth, as it was believed that the possessor of this sacred relic had the right to rule the country. In the eavening visit a Cultural Dance Show. The best way to experience the music and dance culture of Sri Lanka, especially the Kandyan traditions is to witness a cultural dance show in Kandy which provides an insight into the array of dances and playing of drums linked to Sri Lanka’s ancient traditions with the participants dressed in their decorative costumes. Each costume, dance and act signified a story, and the performances will take one on a visual and sensual journey through time and space. Performances such as fire walking and fire breathing as well as Kandyan drumming and devil dancing will be showcased in this show
Upon checkout, out you will head down towards Trincomalee in the East Coast. En-route stop over at Dambulla to visit the Ancient Cave Temples. Dambulla Cave Temple, which is famous for its rock paintings and is among the best preserved monastic temple cave complexes in Sri Lanka. Dambulla’s origins as a place of worship dates back to the reign of King Valagamba in the 1st century BC, who took refuge in these caves when driven out of Anuradhapura by Chola invaders. Once he regained the throne, the king had the interior of the caves transformed in to magnificent rock temples. More paintings and statues were added over time by later kings. Upon reaching Trincomalee, you will check into the idyllic Jungle Beach by Uga Escapes. Spend the remainder of the day at leisure enjoying the beach.
Spend the next two days at leisure enjoying the beach.
After you checkout from Trincomalee, head towards Sigiriya. Upon reaching Habarana en-route you will hop on a jeep to go on a safari to witness the “great gathering of elephants” The Gathering of Elephants’, which is ranked among the world’s top wildlife viewing spectacles runs from June – October each year. Each afternoon, around 150 - 200 individual elephants come out of the forest in to the open to graze on the fresh green pasture by the water’s edge at Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks. You have excellent opportunities here to observe the social dynamics of the Asian Elephant as the large bulls in musth compete among each other and seek the females within the herd, while young calves with carefree abandon get up to their mischievous antics often to the displeasure of its alert mothers within the herd. Water birds such as Painted Stork, Asian Openbill, Woolly-necked Stork along with raptors such as White-bellied Sea Eagles and Greyheaded Fishing Eagles are abundant around these large man-made lakes. Check into your hotel thereafter and spend the evening in leisure.

Please note, the names of hotels mentioned above only indicate that our rates have been based on usage of these hotels. It is not to be construed that accommodation is confirmed at these hotels until and unless we convey the confirmations to you on receipt of your acceptance. However in the event of any of the above mentioned hotels not becoming available at the time of initiating the reservations, we shall book alternate accommodation at a similar or next best available hotel and shall pass on the difference of rates (supplement/reduction whichever is applicable) to you.

In case of any currency fluctuations or amendments in local Government taxes, or any fuel hike, we reserve the right to adjust the tour price accordingly. The due increase or decrease will be communicated accordingly.

Approximate drive times given in the itinerary are direct drive times and do not take into account any traffic situations, road repairs or stops along the way which might increase the time it takes to arrive at the destination.
Upon receipt of Tour Confirmation Voucher, an advance of 25% of the total invoice value if the arrival date is more than 45 days. If the arrival date is less than 45 days, then 100% of the total invoice value is to be paid.

Balance 75% of the invoice value to be paid, at least 45 days prior to the arrival date.

Additional Remarks:
Payments are required within seven days, except where circumstances dictate that we request otherwise.

Suppliers may demand stricter payment terms on some bookings. These occasions will always be advised to you before booking and stated on your Travel Voucher. Individual cancellation terms will always be stated.

Our prices include all applicable taxes.*Frequent fluctuations in the Sri Lankan government tax policy mean that applicable taxes can change suddenly without prior notice.

A bank surcharge of 3% is applicable for payments made by credit cards.

Customers must pay all bank charges when making payments via bank transfers. Failure to do so will invalidate your booking and will bring further change to cover bank charges.

There will be no additional postage fees, booking fees or other hidden charges. Exchange rates are based on live on-day rates at time of booking and are not subject to change.
We are committed to high levels of professionalism to protect your booking. But we reserve the right to cancel your booking in any incidence of Force Majeure. In this event we will return all recoverable costs and, wherever possible, offer an alternative booking of comparable type and quality for your consideration. We cannot be held liable for any incidental expenses that you may incur during arrangements for a booking that is subsequently cancelled by us.

Force Majeure:
We cannot accept responsibility for Force Majeure – defined in these booking conditions as any specific event which we, as the supplier of the services, could not reasonably have foreseen, influenced or avoided. These include war, or threat of war, riots, civil strife, terrorism, contamination, extreme or unusual weather conditions, volcanic eruptions, industrial disputes, changes to sports itineraries, natural and nuclear disasters, fire, flight cancellations or rescheduling by airlines or any similar event beyond our control.
In event of cancellation, in whole or part, we voluntarily return all recoverable costs, above and beyond the limits laid down in our Booking Conditions.

In the case of cancelled tailor-made itineraries, we reserve the right to levy additional admin costs of up to 8 per cent of total booking cost when calculating recoverable costs.

No refunds are normally provided for early checkouts or no-shows.

Any individual wishing to cancel a booking must immediately notify the Classic Destinations representative by email. The cancellation is timed from 09:00hrs on the next working day to enable us to contact Suppliers. In the event of a group cancellation, we will hold each individual equally liable for cancellation costs.
